We skilled in that metal expands when heated, so what will happen if you cut a hole the size of a quarter in the center of a cookie sheet, then pop it in the oven until it's very hot? Will a three months still fit in the hole? Will the hole be bigger or small and why?
Thanks!
The perforate will expand as if was filled with metal. You can can visualize that by assuming that your cookie sheet is actually 4 thin metal bars arranged in a decent, with the hole being the hollow center. Heating up the "cookie sheet" will expand each of the 4 thin bars in length (in extensiveness as well, but we can neglect that for the time being). Suppose each bars expand by 5%; what happens to the hole? It is 5% longer in all the directions as well.
The "dilatation of holes" is in actuality used extensively to produce what is called an interference fit. You heat the outer cylinder and chill the center knock, then slip the hollow cylinder over the center shaft. When the cylinder cools, it contracts on the shaft providing a very watertight fit.
