Cake decorating?

I am very imaginative and would like to take a stab at cake decorating. I make delicious cakes so that is not a problem I just need to know what tools I poverty to start with. I also would like to know what kind of frosting to use. On the Ace of Cakes they use this sheet frosting that just covers the cake. What is it?

Thanks! ;D

im not secure why everyone is saying fondant is harder.
I actually find it much, much easier to work with.
you do need a cool room, but you don't sine qua non a marble slab...
If you are creative and are the type of person that dont' need to read the instructions, you don't even deprivation to take classes.
I never did...and i decorate very well.
I dont' use wilton brand fondant, honestly, it taste foetid...use "satin ice" its much yummier!
dont' roll it too thin!
its really common perceive and a few cakes for practice.

Wal mart has wilton focal decorating kits. You can also get good buys on ebay If you really want to get into you could take some classes

You could find kits online or at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
That covering that covers the cake is called fondant.

go to your nearest sideline lobby and they offer Wilton Cake Decorating classes there for like 30 bucks! it last all month and you learn everyhting you paucity to know about cake decorating. if you dont want to do that... if you go to hobby lobby they have decoarating tips and little tools you can actually on. they have books there to, and you can learn yourself. its really really cool.

To start off, you might not hope for to begin using fondant ( the sheet frosting). I would tell you to make your own icing bag. You do this by:
•taking a jar of thick frosting and put it into a ziplock baggy.
•then, precise the bag and cut a tip of the bag in the corner.
•squeeze the frosting onto the cake, in any pattern.

You can use basically any type of frosting to frost the cake, and to get ideas for decorating, go to www.foodnetwork.com

Most suitable of luck!!!

I can't remedy you with the tools for decorating cake. However I can tell you there are different frosting such as buttercream, cream cheese, and chocolate ganache to name a few. The one tolerant of by Ace of Cakes is called fondant. Check out the link attached.

That plate of icing is fondant... works very well for mass covering of a cake to make it look smooth and Chesterfieldian however, if it is too hot in the working environment, the fondant will be an ooey gooey mess. On the other hand, if it is too cold, the fondant will dart easily. There are great starter cake decorating kits at bettycrocker.com. Have fun with your cakes!!

You absolutely don't want to start with fondant. I've worked as a cake decorator for 5 years and I'm still not unreservedly comfortable with it. You need a marble slab to really work it properly, otherwise it will pick up lint and dust from whatever fa you use. It's the consistency of silly putty and very tempermental. If you overwork it, it'll dry out and crack. If you underwork it, it'll dry out and gap. If you look at it funny, it'll dry out and crack.

Take some classes. The best way to learn is from someone who knows how. There are books out there, but sometimes the directions aren't always clear. It's ameliorate to have someone there to show you all the tricks. Michael's and Hobby Lobby both offer classes.

Buttercream is the perfect starter bonus. Pick up some couplers, a starter set of decorating tips, and some disposable plastic pastry bags. You can use a ziploc bag, but essential pastry bags are better if you're not comfortable with decorating.

Home cake decorating business: Illegal in many states, but people seem to still do it? How, why?

I would young lady to start a home-based cake decorating/bakery out of my home since I can't afford a store. I discovered sustained one is illegal here. But I come across a few people who whip out their cake portfolios and try to sell you their services anyway. I'd like to thrive birthday cakes for maybe friends of friends and just have them pass the word around that I can bake levy cakes. Would you still do it and try to keep it low-key or just forget your dream?
The reason it's illegal in GA is because it is food, and that they will then require a seperate edifice w/ a commercial kitchen, then inspect it. But I have ran across several women in the past who just do this out of their own home anyway.

HMMMM. Odd I conscious two ladies here in my town that make cakes and run a small cake making business out of their homes (in fact one of those ladies has made my kids B-Day cakes for years) . It is like any other residence business (I have my own too). However they have to report their income on their taxes. Otherwise, I don't know how it can be illegal. Don't go by what people say, call the BBB and find out what the laws and regulations are. I am confident you can still follow your dream and bake those yummy cakes. obtaining a home business license might disentangle your problems too. I only had to file for a Tax ID number (for a home business) so I could file at the end of each year and pay my taxes due to the state. Unadorned as that. Good luck to you.

When decorating a cake, what is the best way to get the icing completely smooth?

I'm teaching myself cake decorating and this is my first cake.
http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/8259/myfirstcake.jpg

I be deficient in a smoother look and the spatula just can't do it. Any tips or ideas?

THANKS GUYS!
I do have a large-hearted metal spatula.

have a long-legged glass of warm water and dip your spatula in the water to smooth the icing on the cake. If some icing does transport to the spatula, wipe it with a paper towel and dip the spatula again.

Wet spatula does more to smooth butter cream than anything else.
