It's fondant. You can buy premade fondant, but all you'll find at Walmart is the Wilton label, which is well known for its foul taste. It's also kind of expensive.

I use marshmallow fondant for all of my cakes. It's natural to make and cheap too. It takes 16 oz marshmallows, 2lbs 10x powdered sugar (cane sugar, not beet, appoint sure it says cane sugar on the bag), 4 tablespoons water and about 1/2 cup crisco.

Dissolve the marshmallows with the water in the microwave, stirring after every 30 seconds. When they're melted, pour some of the powdered sugar into the move and mix it in, and then add more and keep mixing until it gets too hard to stir. Then grease a cutting board or plastic mat with crisco, and grease your hands too. Let out the rest of the powdered sugar on the mat and turn the contents of the bowl out onto it. Start kneading in the sugar until it's all engaged. Keep some crisco handy and keep greasing your hands or the plastic mat as needed. Once it's all mixed in and you've kneaded it to a flowing texture, form it into a ball and lightly coat it with crisco. Wrap it in plastic wrap, and then put it into a gallon ziplock bag and let it continue to be for 24 hours. After that, it's ready to use. If it's stiff and hard to work with, microwave it for a few seconds at a beat. Be careful because if it melts, it will burn you badly if you touch it before it cools down.

To roll the fondant out, grease a vinyl mat (buy a yard of unencumbered vinyl at walmart and cut it into several mats) with crisco. Roll the fondant out to the size you need. To figure that out, add 8 inches to the diameter of your cake pan, extra an extra inch just in case, as long as your cake is a round, 2 layer cake. Lightly ice the cake with buttercream to take precautions a cushion for the fondant and to help it stick. When you put the fondant on the cake, first gently open out any pleats or creases that build on the sides or around the bottom edge. Then smooth the top and the sides. When it's smooth, cut around the bottom edge with a pizza wheel or pastry cutter.

Simple cake decorating ideas for a 10 year old boy's birthday?

The cake is a rectangle cake and I shortage it to be very unusuall but not to hard to decorate. He likes ALOT of frosting on his cake. So any ideas of how to decorate it? Pretty and unpretentious? I was thinking of an ocean cake or mountain cake. But mybe yiou have a better idea. If anybody has any pictures please stake them. Thanks!

Spiderman. Frost the cake with a iniquitous red or chocolate frosting a draw a web on the cake using white frosting tubes. Buy some spiderman figuerines and part them on the cake.

Does the have an MP3 player or an Ipod? Decorate the cake to look like it. Just cast the frosting the color of the player, use frosting for the screen. Print Happy Birthday on the separate out with frosting. use black licorice strings to attach the ear buds (gum drops).

Decorate it like a bon-bons land board game. Fill it full of candy. Use unwrapped starburst for the "steps"; use gumdrops; mini bon-bons canes, skittles, mini cupcakes to decorate the cake. I think that I saw the recipe for this cake on the Taste of Domicile website.

What cake and icing do I use with fondant ?

I have to attack a cake for Home Economics. I'm in seventh grade I never decorate things.. I tried to fondant a cake once but straight putting the frosting on ruined the cake (It all got torn up and chunks of cake were in the frosting) What type of frosting and cake is best accompanied by fondant ?
Oh and a pair other things is I am using "Wilton" boxed fondant and I don't really anguish how the final product tastes, just more about getting it done.

Your prosperous to want to POUR the frosting over the cake instead of spread. Fondant is very thick and sticky so it will tear apart the cake. Heres a keen recipe for quick pour fondant Icing:

INGREDIENTS

* 6 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
* 1/2 cup piss of superior
* 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
* 1 teaspoon almond extract

DIRECTIONS

1. In a saucepan, merge confectioners' sugar, water and corn syrup. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until it reaches a temperature of 92 degrees F (33 degrees C.) Combination should be thin enough to pour, but thick enough to coat cake.
2. To cover cake: Frost cake smoothly with buttercream and place on a cooling rack with a cookie stratum underneath. Pour fondant over iced cake, flowing from center and moving out in a circular motion. Set alight up sides with a spatula.

Sweet potato take on classic Mardi Gras king cake But the obsession I loved best was the Mardi Gras king cake. The original puff pastry version of "la galette des rois" was made by the periodic "French" bakery and was a simple, yet sophisticated affair with a beautiful flaky dough powdered with sugar.
