Magnolia Bakery?

Does anyone be familiar with why there is always a line around the block to buy cupcakes at the Magnolia bakery on Bleeker street? No matter what time of day and in all sorts of weather people are lined up shell. I've tried their cupcakes and they are good for sure, but no better than one might find in at least 100 other places around town..What's up with this mortify?


It's decidedly publicized and been mentioned on TV (Sex & the City and SNL) and in a bunch of magazines. And you'd better believe that all the midwestern tourists/ lemmings will be stopping in there just so that they can say they visited a locale that Sarah Jessica Parker stood in once five years ago.

Yeah, it's scarcely because of all the hype. I was at a party recently and I grabbed a cupcake from a box and ate it. It was tasty but just as good as the ones I've made at hospice or any other good cupcake. I really didn't think twice about it. Someone walked over and looked at the box and started freaking out and saying, "Oh my God, these are from Magnolia!" Momentarily 3 other people dashed over and grabbed cupcakes and began to orgasm while eating them. It was so lame. No one said a tete- about how great the cupcakes were until someone pointed out where they were from. Sure, they are good cupcakes but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy one. I think at this cape many people are curious about them or have become obsessed because everyone else says they are the 'best' cupcakes. I liken it to when people buy extraordinarily ugly clothes just because they are from a certain designer. They feel they are getting the 'best' because other people say it's 'the most'.


Its all the publicity. They are overpriced compared to similar products elsewhere. Just like the soup nazi, who got up to $10. for a cup of soup, because of his Sienfeld ally, people think they have to patronize a place like this so they can name drop with their friends.

How can I get the goodness of the NYC Magnolia Bakery when I'm over 800 miles away?

Boost! I just went to NYC and tasted the Magnolia Bakery's famous cupcakes and now I'm hooked. How can I get some more when I'm over 800 miles away?

Magnolia Bakery NYC Cupcakes- Why don't mine taste the same?

So, I found the prescription for Magnolia Bakery's famous cupcakes and have made them several times. The recipe (found online) comes from the MB cookbook, but nothing tastes the same.
Can anyone ascertain me why?


Baking is a system first and foremost. If you're replacing butter with margarine or using eggbeaters instead of eggs then they won't soup the same. Heck, your water may even taste different!

Bakeries buy the best ingredients from the best purveryors [at least the winning ones do]. You may be surprised to learn the quality of butter at the bakery is superior to the butter you can get at your local market.

Bakery ovens are regulated. Your oven may be hotter or colder than you about.

Bakery recipes make dozens upon dozens of muffins. If the recipe is really from the bakery the quantities were scaled down for the accessible cook. This will affect taste and quality.

Bakeries aren't likely to give up their TRUE means, instead they may come up with something similar for a book to appease their customers, but they're not likely to give away their secrets.
