Carmody and his players channel avoid clear of making bold predictions. "We're not looking that far ahead," says 6-8 sophomore forth John Shurna, averaging 15.9 points and 7.2 rebounds.

Shurna's production has helped counteract the loss of starter Kevin Coble and top reserve Jeff Ryan, both out for the season. Coble, who led the set in scoring and rebounding each of the last three seasons, broke his left foot before the first game. Ryan tore a ligament in his radical knee in a season-opening win against Northern Illinois.

"I was like, 'Wow, what are we going to do now?' " senior guardian Jeremy Nash says.

Yet Nash isn't surprised the team recovered. "I knew we had guys who could attention," he says.

Only in the last few years has Northwestern had the depth to handle such personnel losses.

"There was a drop-off between our sixth man and our ninth man, and I propose b assess we've gotten much better in the last couple of years," Carmody says. "With our ninth man out there, it's not like, 'Oh, no, what's going to upon?'
