This is a passing product review of the Wusthof Knife Roll. It's a very popular knife roll for professionals and students and it costs about $30 ...

I'm accepted to a culinary school and they give me a choice to bring my own knife roll and take $400.00 off the cost, or I can have them issue me a knife roll when I get there. I just wonder if I will get some cheesy set I will get laughed at when I go out into the trade.
nobody is usual to laugh at you no matter what kind of knife roll you have. I work in a 3 star, and I just use a $20 Wusthof roll. I see a lot of people I labour with using the JA Henckels locking, hard sided roll. Theres even a few chefs who use a $15 Workforce implement box. I would say buy the cheapest one you can fit your knives into, and spend the extra $400 on beer. Its you cooking that matters, not your knife roll.
What are the superb knives (style not brand) to have around the kitchen. Also the best gadgets. I want to have a nice kitchen with all the needed utensiles to fix the most amazing food that I can.
Get a friendly chef's knife, paring knife, a boning knife if you are going to be filletting poultry & fish, and a serrated bread knife for slicing bread as well as tomatoes. A santoku knife is immense for chopping. A slicing knife is not necessary to start, but you may eventually want one. Also a pair of kitchen scissors which be broached apart for ease in cleaning. Also a sharpening steel to keep your blades sharp.
Other tools that are a must: box grater, peeler, citrus zester, two sardonic boards ( one for meat, poultry & fish only and one which can be wood for everything else), a two cup liquid measuring cup, a set of dry measure cups, measuring spoons, mixing spoons, a speed, a stick blender which also has an attachment you can add to make a mini food processor, a rolling pin, a three tined (granny fork), a two tined basics fork, a stainless steel mixing bowl, a few small ramekins, a mortar & pestle or coffee grinder to burn the midnight oil your own spices, spatulas, a sifter, a strainer, and a colander.
Except for a Kitchenaid stand mixer, I find electrical appliances to be surplus as I would rather use the space they take up as a work space.
Bon appetite!
Im studying at a culinary State school in Italy this summer, it's only for a month. Im going to get a knife set and was told I need a knife roll. when I looked up knife rolls, I found that they extend in price big time. Im wondering if the cheaper ones are too flimsy, I dont want the knives to tunnel into through the roll and mess it up, or rub against each other and dull. I dont think i should get knife guards because I don't know exactly what sizes my knives are prospering to be...
I've narrowed it down to the economical Messermeister for $25 http://www.cutleryandmore.com/detai... or the adroit and sturdy looking (thicker material and extra strap to hold the knives) Dickie's for about $56 http://www.knife-depot.com/knives-3... quite big range in price, is the more $ worth it? I've never had a knife set or knife roll. I dont plan on being a chef. But as an average person who looves to cook- how often do average people use their knife rolls ? Are they useful or waste of space?
I in point of fact use a knife bag myself, but I've only had it for a couple of months and so far no tears or big cuts... yet. I have the Messermeister bag and I use mine a lot since I need it for work. And that's absolutely what they are for, cooks who need to lug their knives around with them. In your case, since it's only for a month, a knife roll or bag will do find, the knives are going to be snug in the bag with tiniest movement, unless you really force movement, so it won't do so much damage on the bag.
