A pumpkin after its carved only positively lasts a few days. Maybe up to a week if you are lucky. It is actually better to go get the pumkin carving knives though because they are safer to use and are meant for carving a pumpkin.
Justified a few days, unless you have room in your fridge. An ice chest could work also. I have read somewhere if they start to get soft to put them in a bath of ice be unfeasible to revive them.

there is a website i saw that recommended using wd-40 on it. (no it will not intercept fire,they say they tried it)

They did a 11PM rumour item on a place that carves 3000 pumpkins to put on their display. They said they are always carving in this season since a pumpkin only lasts a week if carved.

i heard using a accustomed knife is bad.
You have to damage the inside of the pumpkin out where you want the design..make it thin so it is easy to cut with any knife.
