Carving out some fun Ocala

Brenda Robinson worked on a carving of a blooming dogwood. When Jim Kilby, who teaches the coterie, invited everyone to display their work on the front table, Robinson said she was surprised at how complete - and even promising - her shred looked beside the others.
"I've only ever looked at it flat in front of me as I worked on it," Robinson said.
All of the projects on the table looked graceful promising. And, when these wood carvers show their work, people tend to notice. Richard Grenier, who joined the bunch about two years ago, took six of his carvings to a New England Wood Carvers' Association competition in Bedford, Mass., in October, and won ribbons for each of them.
"I took two birds, a pocket outhouse and a replica of a hunting knife, among other things," Grenier said.
Most of the projects involve a lot of profession, such as Robinson's relief carving of dogwood blossoms and leaves.
In Florida, where the climate tends to be mild year-collect, spring comes swiftly once the holidays have passed. And members of the wood carvers' group keep in mind as they drudgery that the popular Cracker Days festival, set for Feb. 27-28 at Rainbow Springs State Park, is only just around the corner. A number of them have participated in the event for several years, showing how to whittle, and displaying and selling their works.
