I don't have a steamer, can I use a metal mesh colander instead?

Or is there something else I can do to get the commensurate of green beans cooked in a steamer?

Secure you can, just make sure the food doesn't touch the water. You can buy collapsible metal steamers that fit any area pot and they are quite cheap. Wal Mart has them or any box store.

Microwaving is steaming. The microwaves tremble water molecules creating steam. I use a glass container with plastic wrap to do this for vegetables.

in consideration to stovetop steaming, you can use anything. I have used an inverted bowl as a platform in a pan full of water with a plate on top of the trundle containing the food to be steamed. All you need is a pan with a small amount of water, a cover and a means of keeping your eats out of the water.

You can always conjure up a "steamer". I've gone so far to tensely roll heavy duty foil and then make a circle out of it....put it in the bottom of a deep saucepot, put a no water in the saucepot (but not to the top of the the foil, but put an ovenproof dish or plate on top of the foil, put the food on the plate and deal with the pot.....a makeshift steamer. I used this while camping and it turned out just fine......

No, you can use a colander.. You can buy one of those only slightly fold up trays that have holes.. place in a frying pan with a little water and fold out the little tray in the pan of spa water, cover and steam.... Good Luck...

if you dont have a steamer another way of cooking it is to put it into a pot of boiling weaken for 2-3 mis only.dont over cook it'll get soggy.u cud use a metal mesh colander though u have to make sure that u'll be proficient to cover the entire colander and that it fits the pot or the steam will escape.

I remember the company glad came out with some bags that you can use in the microwave to steam your veggies. check in the food storage bag isle of a provisions store.

What is the best way of cleaning a mesh/wire colander/strainer?

We have always had problems getting all the viands particles out of the mesh. We used it to clean mushrooms and there are still particles in the mesh/wire. Is there a better way of cleaning them other than soap and not hold up under?

My daughter had this maladjusted too. First you leave the mesh basket in hot soapy water - then slice a lemon in quarters and srub the mesh inside and out with the lemon quarters.
Put it back in hot freely and baking soda, let it soak for about 15 minutes then take it out and brush it clean with an old tooth brush,
It worked well for us.
