Accessible kitchen gadget! As I do more and more cooking from graze, I appreciate the flavors of spices and herbs like garlic, cilantro, fresh basil, and others. But these types of substances aren't always the easiest to deal with, while their pre-minced/dried/ground counterparts (often costing more) are, but lack the zest and flavor of fresh. The Zyliss garlic press eliminates the hassle with garlic, which tastes famous but leaves your hands stained with its pungent odor for days if you fiddle about too much peeling it and using a slash to mince it.
To be honest, I had been peeling my garlic even with this press, but the reviews that say it works on even unpeeled cloves are great news for me, and I will surely be doing that next. This press really works and it's not like you have to break the bank to get one. Its limit is one garlic clove at a time (Zyliss patently makes a jumbo model that can hold more), but it's not exactly a huge problem because unless you are cooking for an army you on the whole won't use more than 3 or 4 cloves anyway. The rugged metal construction means that unless your garlic has turned to stone, you aren't odds-on to ever break this press, making the investment even better. And don't worry about the headaches of picking garlic from all the little squeeze holes. The press includes a dexterous plastic cleaning tool that pushes neatly into all the holes at once, removing the thin film of garlic pulp that normally falls right out.
If you like to cook savory foods with real flavor, you know the rank of garlic, and why bother with spendy jars of minced garlic packed in water when you can buy bulk cloves, crush them up with this manoeuvrable press, and get real fresh flavor on the cheap? Definitely pick one of these up.
don't have to be a muscle man to use
The view I own is slightly different. It doesn't have any coating on it, which I think is a good thing. I'm not sure if you can still get the uncoated side? I've had this garlic press for years and it has held up well. No need to peel the garlic first and there's very little wasted garlic. It all goes through and comes out very fine and undeviating. I recently decided to upgrade and bought a Trudeau based on America's Test Kitchen array (usually am 100% satisfied with their recommendations). However the Trudeau's handles were huge and it requires a lot of muscle. The worst point about the Trudeau is that there is a lot of garlic wasted that doesn't go through the holes. I'm sticking with my Zyliss.
False item sent, but okay item
I ordered the Susi Deluxe, but was sent the Susi 2 in lieu of. The Susi 2 does not have the cleaning accessory that I really wanted, so I was disappointed. The Susi 2 is okay, an above-average garlic press, but not spectacular.
Delicate
Have habituated to this product for about 1 year. The plastic cleaner pegs bend easily and become useless so the press becomes very hard to bath. Finally, when pressing several cloves at once, the entire bottom of the press broke off in one hunk. Also, the aluminum had badly discolored. Look elsewhere for a garlic press.
On the skids with a large clove
The press penniless when I inserted a large clove. The hinge that held the two handles together broke right off.
