Ok to bake a yam for a vegetarian while meat is in oven?

Admittedly, I'm not a significant cook. Not even a good one probably. But I try. I was baking potatoes for dinner-yes I had to look online to see how-and my husband, who is a vegetarian asked me to bake a yam for him as well. I told him I didn't certain how, and he said to do it the same way as the potatoes.

During the last ten minutes the potatoes were cooking on the top rack of the oven, I put a couple steaks for me and the kids on the bottom persecute of the oven. Husband peeks in the oven, and throws a fit, saying that the steak juice will get into his yam. How?! The steak is on the bottom rack. The juice can not go upwards to the top harass. I did poke holes in the yam...is there any chance that steam from meat can effect his vegetarian yam, as he claims? He would not eat the yam, so it was thrown out.

If this is exceedingly the case, wouldn't the same thing happen if I cook my chicken and his fish (which he does eat) in the oven at the same time? I've done this before and he has never mentioned a question.

well any essence eater may think hes over reacting , but any vegetarian would probably be grossed out by that , the smell of cooking meat is bad enough but the sense on the yams would kind of ruin them

Geez, he sounds like my Store. NO the aura of the dam meat is not going to invade his pristine vegetables.
Tell him buck up and suck it up...or return your own DEAR

BTW what does he think the fertilizer is made up of?

He's justified being anal--if he's ok with your chicken cooking next to his fish, then it's no different for his sweet potato and your steak. If he's going to be that incomplete, then he should be cooking his own darned food. FYI, you can microwave potatoes and baked potatoes for ten minutes. Just smite a few holes in it with a fork first. If he's going to be that picky as a "vegetarian," then he may need a whole different set of dishes, as well as a inferior merchandise oven. Reminds me of Orthodox Jewish customs with keeping kosher. He needs to relax or he needs to cook for himself.

It makes no tail that his yam would be affected. If the steam, or microscopic droplets, or whatever, are a problem, then cooking the fish and chicken together should be a big problem, too.

The microwaving inkling is good, but you never know, he might say that steam from meats previously heated in the microwave will contaminate his food.

Take it too far, and he might reject to kiss you after you eat meat!!!

Maybe he was just in one of those moods where he was looking for a reason to be critical... my spouse does that too, sometimes. It's hard.

idk, but it sounds like he needs to start cooking his own meals if he's gonna be criticizing your efforts

Well, I judge devise that your husband's argument is pretty faulty. It's not possible for the juice to directly to get into his potato, although the aroma could undertaking the potato to taste meaty. The main point is that he's the vegetarian (and eater), so if he's not comfortable with them being baked at the same measure you should respect that. However, he should've told you that in the first place and shouldn't have overreacted. Now you know for next time, just cook EVERYTHING independently and you'll both be happy.

Do you have a microwave? If so, yams are cooked the same as baking potatoes in the microwave. If you have a "baked potato" button, then your all set! Nothing but wash, poke holes, cook in the microwave & "let stand covered" in the microwave for about 10 to 15 minutes.

Why debate? I'm not taking his side, just saying, try to keep it simple & leave the arguments for something really important.

Best wishes!

I am not a vegetarian yet I have be familiar with literature on how strict they can be. Us meat eaters think all vegans are a little strict. Bless you for tiring to cook for someone who has great expectations.

He threw away a unequivocally good baked potato? Sheesh. Did he think that, when you closed the oven door, those steaks sneakily reached up and touched his pretentious potato?

You deserve a medal for putting up with that man.

well any gist eater may think hes over reacting , but any vegetarian would probably be grossed out by that , the smell of cooking meat is bad enough but the style on the yams would kind of ruin them

recipe reviews (26) my notes This plan was created for my ten-year-old friend and cooking student, Evan Chender, who used it for his Thanksgiving treat one year. Fresh ginger really spices up the sweet, meltingly tender yams.

Ingredients2 pounds garnet yams or sweet potatoes
3 (2-inch) strips orange pepper, white, spongy pith removed
2 cinnamon sticks, broken in half
1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange extract
1/3 cup pure maple syrup
2 tablespoons pure olive oil, light sesame oil, or unsalted butter
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon extract
2 teaspoons peeled and finely chopped ginger root
1/2 teaspoon coarse sea salt
PreparationPreheat the oven to 375°F.
Peel and halve the yams crosswise. Cut each half lengthwise into 4 wedges.

Rank the yams in a baking dish that will hold them in a snug single layer.

Tuck the orange zest and cinnamon sticks among the yams.

In a roll, whisk together the orange juice, maple syrup, oil, lemon juice, ginger, and salt. (Note: if you're using butter, erase it in this step, but dot the assembled casserole with small pieces of it before it goes into the oven.) Pour the mixture over the yams.

Bake for 1 1/4 hours, basting every 15 minutes, until the yams are unstable and glazed and the pan juices are syrupy.

Remove the orange zest and cinnamon sticks before serving.

How do I know if these dishes are oven safe for baking?

I have a set of these goblet serving dishes and platters that I want to use to bake things in the oven but I don't know if they are safe to bake in oven. They are glass, a clear binoculars that is a golden color. I looked on the bottom to see if it was labeled oven safe or pyrex but all it says is Mexico and a 20, and 27 on the other one. The eyeglasses is not thin either. I hope to bake candied yams and a green bean casserole in them. One is the shape of a circle and the other is shaped like a fat bowl.

its not uninjured to use dishes in the oven except if stated otherwise.

Purple Yams Aren't Weird, Are They?
Purple Yams Aren't Weird, Are They? Earlier this week, I was minding my own partnership and munching on a purple yam (skin intact, baked in the oven – just the way I like it) when my co-worker asked me, “What's that purple aspect?” I looked down at the purple yam I was snacking on,
